“Sustainability isn’t just a commitment. It’s our responsibility. We are committed to acting responsibly, and holding ourselves, and those we do business with, to the highest standards of conduct and ethics” – Kevin O’Connor CEO of ESP
ESP: Your trusted adoption partner
With over 1.1 million energised connections adopted over 25 years, ESP is the largest adoption only utilities company in the UK.
ESP has the industry’s most flexible design and adoption standards for new networks, and by working with partners to optimise the demand and generation loads ESP adopted networks are efficient using less materials and reducing the construction costs.
Solution-Led Engineering Innovation
Sustainability and the environmental impact of development have long been concerns within the Construction Industry. As an Independent Asset Adopter, ESP wholly recognises the importance of these matters, recently publishing our first Sustainability Report, which clearly outlines how ESP is addressing these key areas of concern.
- We’re leading the way in rolling out much needed infrastructure for electric vehicles across the UK, which reduces emissions and promotes growth within the EV market.
- We believe in creating resilient, eco-conscious networks.
- We pride ourselves on innovative, creative thinking and offering expert-led solutions that provide social, economic and environmental benefits. This flexibility and solution-led engineering helps developers to reach net-zero targets by supporting goals around water neutrality, water efficiency, carbon saving, bio-diversity net gain and nutrient neutrality.
Turning Up the Heat
We’re addressing the challenges posed by future home standards, investing in understanding network impacts and supporting the deployment of green technologies. Our recent entrance into heat networks illustrates this effort, heat networks have the potential to decarbonise heating for homes from the outset. District Heating uses thermal storage, allowing peaks in demand to be smoothed by storing heat when there is available capacity and generating it when there is capacity in the network, this lowers the maximum demand for the site.
Measuring and Reducing Carbon Emissions
Measuring and reducing carbon emissions is crucial to reaching our ambitious sustainability goals.
ESP has set externally verified, Paris-aligned carbon reduction targets, actively monitoring and reducing emissions across operations since 2018.
In 2024, ESP became a Toitū carbon reduce certified business, achieving certification under ISO 14064, highlighting our dedication to reducing carbon emissions and reporting progress consistently and with transparency
- ESP adopt distribution Substations with pre-cast plinths, primary substations with smaller plinths.
- ESP Water will adopt plastic sewer pipes, rationalised chamber designs, SuDS features that mimic nature, adoption of attenuation basins, and work with you to reduce sewer pipe size and potentially amend the route.
- All of these efforts reduce the amount of concrete and corresponding CO2.
Additionally, we are implementing low-loss transformers across our networks to make them more efficient.
We’re actively collaborating with an Ofgem funded innovation project to explore the potential benefits of reconfiguring low-voltage networks and load shifting.
Sustainable Drainage Systems
ESP adopts and promotes the use sustainable drainage systems (SuDs) in developments. We encourage a holistic approach to sustainable drainage and can offer developers a range of adoption options to best suit the local needs.
SUDS have numerous benefits including enhancement in biodiversity net gains, holding back flows and offer wider amenity benefits. ESP also adopt inline and offline tanks and can support SUDS stacking, unlocking more developable space for housing.
By engaging with the developer’s team, we encourage the design and then adopt communal SuDS features that promote blue-green placemaking , once adopted we can engage with the community interest company.
